HOW IT ALL STARTED

The federal government and the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) have stated that high-speed internet should be made available to all citizens, regardless of where they live.

The federal government is making some money available to facilitate this.

Residents of Denman and Hornby Islands have joined together to bring high-speed internet and are applying for these grants.

This site provides information on our work and the available programs.

Islanders speak out for better internet

ISLANDERS PLAN FOR HIGH-SPEED INTERNET

interesting note, the file size of the Volume 2 final report, done as a .pdf, is too large to upload from Hornby Island. The attached Word doc. is about half the file size, and after repeated attempts successfully uploaded. For industry players needing a non-draft report, please contact us for a copy of the final .pdf doc.karen@hiceec.org

GRAPEVINE REPORT – February 17/21 panel discussion:

This report, done Feb./21 explains the various options available for internet service. This includes the existing copper wiring infrastructure, the opportunities associated with high speed fibre optic service, satelitte dish (e.g. Xplornet), Telus Smart Hub, low earth orbit satelite constellations (e.g. Starlink)

Thanks to M.L.A.’s Josie Osborne and Lisa Beare, for sharing the great news of a successful grant application for high speed internet to the Islands.

An explanation of the $5.64 million grant to bring “last mile” high speed, fibre-optic internet service to premises on Hornby and Denman Islands. The grant was awarded to City West Telecommunication, as the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that represented Hornby and Denman Islands through the application process. Residents will have the opportunity to opt-in for a “drop”, right to their home, for no charge if done during the initial installation.

This article is a must read to help understand the high speed, fibre optic project that is being proposed for Denmand and Hornby Islands.

Answering questions that have come up………keep informed.

A “hello” from City West, with a friendly explanation of how to opt-in for a “drop” to your premise. By expressing your interest now, it will expedite how fast the program could get underway. The first activities in development are permitting and design. When you opt-in to receive a drop on the side of your building/for your location, work can commence on the preliminary work.
